Sir Moses BustThe Sir Moses Montefiore Society was established to honor the revered British philanthropist, Sir Moses Montefiore, for whom the medical center was named.  The Society is an organization that offers friends of Montefiore, especially staff and alumni, the opportunity to assist in preserving our historic traditions.

Sir Moses Montefiore was a world-renowned 19th Century businessman and philanthropist who devoted himself to Jewish causes in the Ottoman Empire and Tsarist Russia.  He was a figure of compelling significance to world Jewry.  In the winter of 1884 a group of lay and religious leaders of New York's Jewish Community led by Jacob H. Schiff, a brilliant young financier, gathered to decide how best to honor Montefiore on his approaching 100th birthday.  A number of worthy community projects were considered but a census gathered around a hospital for the chronically ill.  In October of that very year the Montefiore Home for Incurables opened its doors.

In creating the Montefiore Home, a facility was established that would occupy a unique position among institutions for the sick, a place where patients with long term debilitating illnesses could be cared for when an acute care hospital could offer no help.  The original Montefiore Home has evolved into Montefiore Medical Center, a remarkable, highly complex academic medical center now the center of an extraordinary integrated delivery system.

The Sir Moses Montefiore Society embodies the spirit of giving that Sir Montefiore inspired among his peers and secures Montefiore's leadership in academic medicine.

Members of The Sir Moses Montefiore Society support a wide range of services and programs that directly benefit the patients and community at Montefiore Medical Center.  The Society's gifts allow the medical center the flexibility to meets its highest and most urgent needs, oftentimes needs that might otherwise go unmet.  In the past, The Society has supported programs and services for the elderly, services for abused and neglected children, women's health issues and the advancement of cancer and heart disease research.

The Sir Moses Montefiore Society members are friends, physicians, nurses, social workers, alumni, patients, and associates; individuals committed to the future of this medical center and eager to continue playing a vital role in preserving Montefiore's reputation as an outstanding health care provider in the Bronx and surrounding communities.
